Champ Elect claims Calaway Gal Stakes

Champ Elect wins 2016 Listed Calaway Gal Stakes Champ Elect wins 2016 Listed Calaway Gal Stakes

Christmas came early for the owners of Adrenaline thoroughbred Champ Elect who won the Calaway Gal Stakes on 17 December at Doomben.

With this win, she qualified for the lucrative Magic Millions 2yo Classic in January 2017. This is a massive achievement for a horse that Chris Munce says will only get better with time. She's now two wins from two starts with more than $100k in prizemoney to her name and the black type to make a broodmare.

The win was no sure thing after Champ Elect drew a wide barrier. She drifted in betting to $6 with punters prepared to bet against her because of the draw. Champ Elect was forced to work outside the field for most of the race, covering ground three to four wide, but jockey Damian Browne kept her relaxed.

Champ Elect ran down the field in the straight to claim the win by a half neck from Make My Own Luck. Her win made it a Saturday double for Chris Munce and Damian Browne after Ours To Keep won the Phelan Ready Stakes in the race prior.

Champ Elect was bought by Adrenaline Thoroughbreds at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2016 and she was bred by Attunga Stud.

Nadia Horne of Radio TAB said that Champ Elect appeared to be working off raw ability to “put the field away with ease”.

Chris agrees that Champ Elect is still learning. “You could still see the way she galloped [on 17 December], she wasn’t sure of the horses on her inside – she wanted to run away from them slightly”.

“The minute she learns to do everything right and correctly, you’ll see the best of her”.

It’s a tantalising prospect for Champ Elect’s owners.
