Champ Elect makes us proud in 2YO Classic

Having a starter in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic was a heady and unforgettable experience shared by Adrenaline owners in January 2017.

Adrenaline’s Champ Elect lined up in the coveted $2m feature race with her owners trackside and abuzz with nervous energy.

We knew she needed luck to compete over 1200m. Toby Edmond’s unbeaten filly Houtzen was commanding short odds, even after drawing wide, and Chris Waller’s big filly From Within had people talking. Champ Elect was also up against her stablemate, the Chris Munce owned-and-trained Ours To Keep, who had the inside running from barrier 2.

Champ Elect jumped from an outside gate - barrier 14 - and settled near the tail of the field. It was difficult to gauge the pace of the race in the initial stages and we could only hope the frontrunners were going hard early – if it was a sit-and-sprint, Champ Elect was in trouble!

But in the straight, she stepped up a gear and ran down half a field of leading Australian two-year-olds. After the winner - the remarkable Houtzen - and second-placed Chauffeur, we would argue Champ Elect had the best run home.

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McIvoy rode Champ Elect for the first time in the Classic and he believes she would have made things interesting if the race had been 200m more.

Consistent with our thoughts and the opinion of trainer Chris Munce, Kerrin considers Champ Elect will improve further to become a quality middle-distance or staying racehorse of the future. With her precocious power and athleticism, we felt confident Champ Elect would start her racing career as a two-year-old, and claiming the Calaway Gal Stakes and performing over sprint-distances in the Magic Millions is a dream come true.

She pulled up well after the race and is now spelling at Eureka Stud before commencing a campaign towards the Brisbane Winter Carnival that will have her owners on the edge of their seats. We can't wait!
