Octagonal needs no introduction to fans of Australian racing, and this could be your last chance to a buy a son of the champion racehorse, after he was recently retired from stud. Octagonal was Australian Champion two-year-old and Australian Horse of the Year at age three. He was the winner of ten Group 1 races and earned over $5.8 million in prize money. Octagonal sired four Group 1 winners, including Lonhro, as well as 24 other stakes winners such as Hosannah, Boreale and Star of Octagonal. He won many fans because he had heart – Octagonal would always find the line to edge out his competition, often by hearts-in-mouth margins.

Octagonal’s breeding is impeccable – he is part of the most notable staying lineage in Australasia, and he and his close relatives are household names to many Australians. Octagonal’s dam, Eight Carat, is the greatest Southern Hemisphere broodmare bar none. She produced five Group 1 winners (Octagonal, Kaapstad, Mouawad, Diamond Lover and Our Marquise) and is the matriarch of a star-studded dynasty that includes racing greats like Commands, Danewin, Tristalove, Viscount, Viking Ruler, Kempinsky and Don Eduardo. Octagonal’s sire is Zabeel (by Sir Tristram), who is the patriarch of staying horses in Australasia. Octagonal is arguably the best of Zabeel’s progeny, and we’re very excited to have an Octagonal colt in our stable.

This colt's dam, Muffle, has had six foals to race, all of them winners. Three of her offspring have shown stakes quality. Scarf was a stakes winning three-quarter brother to this colt (by Lonhro), and Stifle is a full brother and a promising racehorse whose career was cut short by injury after winning four races. In his last start, he placed second to Group winner Lamasery. Another half-brother, Silent Saga (Real Saga x Muffle), is now coming to prominence. He finished just 1.6 lengths behind Surge Ahead in the Listed Connoisseur Stakes (1800m). Surge Ahead went on to finish 1.9 lengths behind Shamus Award in the Australian Guineas (Gr.1), pointing to the credentials of Silent Saga, and Clinton McDonald’s stable has a very high opinion of his prospects over middle distances.

This colt is a big, nicely balanced horse who has further scope for growth and shows the potential to deliver on the staying bloodlines in his pedigree. He has the longer barrelled chest of a staying horse. The angle of his shoulder will provide cushioning and suspension while his long strong forearm and shorter cannons provide length of stride. His heart rate is strong and measured, which indicates the temperament and physiology required to be a top racehorse. He is a late foal – born in November – and the vendors would have entered him in the Magic Millions Premier sale in January 2014 based on pedigree and type. He’s eligible for both QTIS (Qld) and BOBS (NSW) bonus prize money.
