FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It’s common to have questions about racehorse syndication, particularly if you’re new to the sport. We’ve provided answers to a few of the most popular queries below.
Feel free to contact us with any further questions you might have.
Racehorse syndication involves establishing a racing partnership where more than one person is involved in the ownership of a horse. Owners may hold shares of varying size in the horse. Syndication is a popular way to own a racehorse because it reduces your costs - and the selection, administration and communication is managed for you.
Only approved promoters operating under national ASIC regulations can legally advertise and sell shares in racehorses. Adrenaline Thoroughbreds is an approved promoter with Racing Queensland and operates as an authorised representative (ARN 456200) under Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) no. 288 213.
It’s not unreasonable to want to know what it costs to own a racehorse. For the most part, this consists of your upfront investment in the horse, and the rolling costs of maintenance and training. The cost of buying an initial share is known as the purchase price. The cost of maintaining the horse is separate to the purchase price and is known as the monthly ongoings. On rare occasions there may be unexpected expenses associated with illness or injury. Depending on circumstances, these may be apportioned across the ownership group based on share size.
Purchase Price
The beauty of thoroughbred syndication is that there are options to fit every budget.
The purchase price for our horses typically includes all expenses for up to 6 months from the point of advertising the shares for sale (as set out in detail in the PDS). This includes breaking in, spelling and early education for your horse. For most horses, the purchase price also includes nomination fees for lucrative race series’ including the Magic Millions, Golden Slipper and QTIS bonus scheme or similar.
The cost of a share depends on:
Purchase prices for Australian thoroughbreds are extremely variable. We seek out the middle ground (usually $20-$100K) to remain affordable for our owners without compromising on breeding, type and racing potential.
See our Available Shares page for full details on horses available and cost per share and contact us to discuss your options.
The purchase price is paid upfront prior to any ownership agreement being finalised.
Monthly Ongoings
The benefit of buying through Adrenaline is that the variability of monthly ongoing costs is managed for you. Expenses can vary significantly depending on whether your horse is racing, training, pre-training or spelling which can make the management of your costs difficult to budget on your own. Some syndicates and trainers will ask suppliers (farriers, vets, transportation agents etc.) to bill each syndicate member directly, meaning the owners get multiple unexpected bills across a month.
At Adrenaline, we’ve taken the guesswork out of racehorse ownership with a fixed monthly rate based on share size. This is calculated based on:
The ongoing monthly costs for each horse are clearly stated in the horse’s sale profile, provided to you when you make an enquiry.
Our flat monthly rate includes general training expenses and routine extras. Our rates have been developed in consultation with our trainers and include:
Adrenaline Thoroughbreds manage the administration tasks associated with racehorse ownership, including compliance and registrations through Racing Queensland and the payment of invoices (including from trainers, spelling farms and industry bodies). We also provide comprehensive communication services to our owners at no additional cost.
Expenses that are not covered in the monthly rate include:
Where costs are incurred for feature races or racing outside South-East Queensland, you can generally count yourself lucky – it means your horse is competing for bigger spoils further afield!
Buying a share with Adrenaline is easy – it only takes four steps:

When your horse is racing, you will be provided with:
Please note that the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) and other south-east Queensland Race Clubs makes these privileges available to a maximum of 20 people per syndicate, and that Mounting Enclosure entry can be restricted by race clubs and stewards. At Adrenaline we are very committed to ensuring all owners have an exciting race day experience, including access to race day privileges, regardless of share size, and will do our best to deliver this.
Australia is third only to the United States and Japan in the amount of prizemoney distributed annually from thoroughbred horse racing.
At Adrenaline Thoroughbreds, we take no fees from prizemoney won by your horse. It’s distributed to the owners pro-rata based on the size of the share you own, less any fees deducted in accordance with regulations (the trainer receives 10% of prizemoney and the jockey receives 5%. A 1% deduction for Animal Care is applied by Racing Queensland to all prizemoney prior to distribution).
In accordance with Australian racing regulations, owners who have a share of 5 per cent or more are named in the race book (or race program) when their horse is running.
Yes! You are more than welcome to visit your horse. To help facilitate this, Adrenaline Thoroughbreds organises periodic social events (visits to the spelling farm, visits to the pre-training complex, BBQ breakfast at the stables) where you can see your horse and meet other owners.
We are committed to securing a satisfying life after racing for all of our horses. Thoroughbreds are a versatile breed and with good education, an Adrenaline racehorse can become a successful equestrian horse or personal pet. We are proud to have found good homes for all our retired racehorses, who are all living their best life on properties throughout Australia.
Some horses have residual value when their racing career is over. Female horses (fillies and mares) can become broodmares and a successful colt may generate income at stud. Decisions in relation to the retirement of your horse will be made in consultation with all owners.
