HORSE RACING IN QUEENSLAND

At Adrenaline, we’re proud to be a Brisbane-based business challenging the historical dominance of racing in New South Wales and Victoria and making the most of Queensland’s temperate climate to get the best out of our owner’s horses.

Here are just a few of the things we love about racing in Queensland.

Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival

Sydney has Autumn racing, and Melbourne claims Spring, but the racing world turns its attention to Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

The best racing comes to Queensland for the Carnival, which is held annually in May and June. Feature races include the Doomben Cup, the Doomben 10000, the Queensland Oaks and the iconic Stradbroke Day

Queensland racing fans have had the opportunity to go to the races and see the cream of the Australian turf in recent years, cheering home Black Caviar in the Gr1 BTC Cup, Winx in the Gr.1 Queensland Oaks and Incentivise in the Tattersall’s Cup.

Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme (QTIS)

The successful QTIS series is a program to promote the buying and racing of Queensland-bred horses which means a windfall for owners of these horses. Only QTIS-eligible horses can share in over $10 million in bonuses on all 2yo and 3yo races in Queensland, with QTISx Bonuses available for winners of black type and feature races conducted in Queensland.

As of December 2020, a total of up to $15.5M in bonuses will be offered on top of standard prizemoney for eligible Queensland-bred and bred-back horses in identified QTIS races. The bonuses really add up - the following table lists the difference in prizemoney for QTIS and non-QTIS horses (current at December 2018):

Magic Millions

The Magic Millions has become synonymous with racing in Queensland since Gerry Harvey and John Singleton bought this Gold Coast auction house in 1997.

With typical aplomb, these Australian business identities teamed their yearling sales with a racing carnival that has commanded national and international interest.

All yearlings listed and sold at any recognised Magic Millions Yearling Sale are eligible for the Magic Millions Race Series. These closed races are only for Magic Millions graduates and prizemoney totals $14M. This includes the lucrative $2M Magic Millions 2YO Classic and the $2M 3YO Guineas - two of the richest races in Australia - as well as 23 other races across six states. From 2023, the series will recognise the importance of syndicates to the racing world by adding the $1M Magic Millions The Syndicate for horses owned by a minimum of 20 individual registered owners and/or syndicate members.

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN

The Mort & Co King of the Mountain is the latest feature race addition to the Queensland Racing Calendar. Run over 1200m at the Clifford Park racecourse on the scenic Darling Downs, the race will use the slot race concept, seen so successfully in The Everest at Randwick and The Archer in Rockhampton. The $750k race will close out the racing year, first being run on 31 December 2022 and on the last Saturday in December each year after that.

The race is restricted to Queensland-bred horses prepared by a trainer based in Queensland – something that Adrenaline horses are well-placed to qualify for! Racing Queensland has gone on record saying that, “A race for Queensland-bred horses only is a fantastic initiative, incentivising the local breeding industry and the highly vaunted QTIS scheme, which provides more than $12 million in prize money bonuses each year.

“We unashamedly want people to back Queensland, buy Queensland and breed Queensland.”

We couldn’t agree more.
