BARRY LOCKWOOD

Born and bred in Tamworth, Barry Lockwood knew his future lay with horses from a very young age.  It started with the local pony club, progressed to riding “work” on his father’s hobby thoroughbreds and really set in when he started an apprenticeship with master farrier Arthur Marshall when he was fifteen years old.

Fifteen years later a series of fortunate events saw him taking on the role of stable foreman to prominent NSW trainer Paul Sutherland. It was during this time that he forged a friendship with New Zealand trainer Brian Smith which led to him managing Brian’s Rosehill stables while Brian was spending some time in Brisbane.  Not long after, in 1975, he got his trainer’s license and after a few stints in NSW and Victoria headed to the Sunshine State and Eagle Farm in 2005.

Career highlights include training Shadea to 2 wins, 6 placings and $226,000 – not bad winnings for thirty years ago – but those who know their horse history will recognise her as the dam of the eleven-times Group 1 champion Lonhro and his full brother triple Group 1 winner Niello. Tokamak, the horse who got him started in Brisbane, won two listed races at Eagle Farm. Surprise Bullet, Skytrek, Hidden Pearl, Adorabubble and Tumbler were all multiple winners for the stable.  More recently Fiery Heights, I’ve Gotta Nel, Doss, Showus Ya Diamonds, A Lot Like Home and Cruze have flown the flag for the stables.

Barry is well-respected in the industry and his hands-on approach and individual attention to each horse under his care means that your horse will be given every opportunity to fulfil its potential.  He trains out of the top-class Eagle Farm Racecourse facilities.

We’re pleased to welcome Barry to the Adrenaline team.
